A Spooky Silhouette in the Sky
Eric Lind was visiting his parents' house in Eureka when they received an unusual call from a neighbor, telling them to look out into their backyard. At first, it was difficult to tell what the owl had snatched, but upon closer inspection, it became clear—it was carrying a stick horse, creating an image straight out of a Halloween tale. The sight of the owl swooping through the air with the toy made for a perfect seasonal snapshot, and Lind couldn’t resist sharing it online.
Lind told Newsweek, "We quickly spotted the owl and could immediately recognize that it was carrying a stick horse." He shared the humorous images on Facebook on October 14, where the post quickly went viral, gathering thousands of reactions. The comments section became a hub of playful banter as users embraced the Halloween spirit. One user joked, "Owl Jr. doesn't quite understand quidditch," while another commented, "It just needs the Wicked Witch of the West theme music."
Why Did the Owl Steal a Stick Horse?
While the image is undeniably amusing, some have speculated on why the owl might have taken a liking to the toy. It's possible the bird was intrigued by the size and texture of the stick horse's head, which could resemble a small rodent or rabbit, making it potential prey in the owl's eyes. Bird experts also note that juvenile raptors, such as red-tailed hawks, are known to "play" with inanimate objects, practicing their hunting skills by stalking and pouncing on items like sticks or rocks.
Lind's lighthearted post read, "Hilldale/Forest Park/Ridge Lane neighbors... If your child is missing their stick horse, you'll have to talk to the owl!" The post’s playful tone resonated with viewers, with many commenting that the unusual sight made their day. One Twitter user wrote, "This owl and his stick horse made my day," while another said, "Owl now owns the stick horse. I don't make the rules."
Spreading Halloween Cheer
Lind's intention was simply to share a laugh with family and friends, but the photos have gone viral across social media platforms, bringing joy to thousands. "We were shocked and very surprised," Lind said. "I posted it because it brought a good laugh and smile to my family—so I thought others would enjoy it too." The internet has embraced the owl’s broomstick-like flight, with the story gaining traction on Twitter, where users can't get enough of the Halloween-perfect photos.
"I've never seen anything like it," said one Facebook user. "That is the funniest thing I've seen in a long time." Whether it's making people laugh or adding to the spooky season's charm, this owl's escapade has certainly cast a spell of delight over the internet.
