Bears Simplify Offensive Scheme to Support Caleb Williams Under Thomas Brown
The Chicago Bears have made waves by promoting Thomas Brown to offensive coordinator, a move intended to realign the team’s focus around rookie quarterback Caleb Williams. Despite speculation about a potential benching, head coach Matt Eberflus confirmed that Williams will remain the starter.

Adjustments in Chicago
The decision follows a turbulent few weeks in which former OC Shane Waldron was dismissed, prompting the Bears to reassess their approach. While Williams initially showed flashes of brilliance, throwing seven touchdowns to one interception during a three-game win streak, his performance recently dipped due to growing pains adjusting to the professional level.

Brown, who played a key role in simplifying the offense for Bryce Young during his rookie season in Carolina, plans to adopt a similar approach. His goal: return to the basics and tailor the game plan to Williams' strengths.

Challenges in Williams' Development
Williams’ transition has been more challenging than anticipated, largely due to his college system's lack of pro-level responsibilities. Learning to read defenses, call protections, and audible at the line of scrimmage has been a steep learning curve. The Bears identified this gap early in organized team activities and have worked diligently to help Williams bridge it.

Despite setbacks, Williams’ work ethic and resilience have earned him respect from teammates like wide receiver DJ Moore, who said:
"You’ve got to have support for him, no matter what. He’s trying to learn everything at once, and defenses are throwing a lot at him."

Simplification as the Key to Success
Under Brown’s leadership, the offense will focus on faster decision-making, quicker releases, and utilizing motion and shifts to open up opportunities. These changes aim to reduce Williams’ league-high 38 sacks, which have significantly impacted game outcomes.

Statistically, the Bears perform far better in games with fewer sacks. They average 5.2 yards per play on sack-free drives compared to just 2.7 yards per play on drives where Williams is sacked. Simplifying the offense could help him avoid pressure, sustain drives, and improve the team's scoring efficiency.

Balancing the Attack
The new scheme will emphasize play-action and keeper plays, building on the run game to create explosive opportunities. Brown has stressed the importance of Williams adopting a “point guard” mentality, staying fundamentally sound, and avoiding reliance on athleticism alone.

A Path Forward
The Bears hope these adjustments will lead to the type of success other teams have seen after mid-season coaching changes, such as the Buffalo Bills' promotion of Joe Brady to OC last year.

For Chicago, the ultimate goal is clear: to nurture their franchise quarterback and find a winning formula to close out the season strong.
