Snowstorm to Bring High Winds and Slushy Roads to Chicago Area

A winter storm is bringing the season's first measurable snow to the Chicago area Thursday morning, with 1–3 inches expected. The storm may cause slushy road conditions and high winds, especially during the afternoon. The Chicago region experienced its first snowflakes of the season overnight, and a more significant snowstorm is expected during Thursday morning’s commute.

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for several counties, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will. The advisory begins at 7 a.m. and remains in effect until 1 p.m.

ABC7 AccuWeather Meteorologist Tracy Butler forecasts snowfall reaching Chicago around 8 a.m., continuing until approximately 2 p.m. before transitioning to rain. Accumulations of one to three inches are likely, primarily on grassy areas, with slushy road conditions developing.

The NWS predicts snowfall rates of up to one inch per hour during the heaviest periods, accompanied by increasing winds in the afternoon.

In preparation, the Department of Streets and Sanitation deployed salt spreaders overnight, focusing on major roadways and Lake Shore Drive. Drivers are urged to proceed cautiously, allocate extra travel time, and maintain safe distances between vehicles.
