A Touching Tale of Two Orphaned Souls Who Found Comfort in Each Other
Friendships between animals are always a joy to witness, especially when they cross species lines. One particularly touching story out of Texas reminds us that love and companionship can blossom under the unlikeliest of circumstances. This is the story of Jasper, an orphaned raccoon, and Hope, a young deer — two animals who found a family in each other after losing their own.
Last year, Carrie Long, a licensed wildlife rehabilitator and the founder of the nonprofit organization Texas Fawn and Friends, received an urgent call about a distressed raccoon. The tiny creature, only three weeks old, had been abandoned by his mother and was discovered barely clinging to life in the middle of a rainstorm. Long, whose nonprofit primarily rescues orphaned fawns, didn’t hesitate to step in and help. She brought the little raccoon into her care and named him Jasper. “We weren’t sure if he was going to survive,” Long shared in an interview with The Dodo. With intensive care, warmth, and love, Jasper pulled through — and what happened next is nothing short of magical.Despite growing into adulthood and having the freedom to leave, Jasper chose to stay at the sanctuary, surrounded by over 75 orphaned deer currently under Long’s protection. But among all the deer he could have befriended, one fawn stood out — a gentle soul named Hope, who had also lost her mother as a baby. The two quickly became inseparable.“Jasper just loves her,” Long said. “Whenever he sees Hope, he runs to her, licking her face and showering her with affection. It’s just the sweetest thing.”Jasper and Hope spend their days roaming the open spaces of the sanctuary, and in the evenings, Hope often lies down beside Jasper for a peaceful rest. “He sees her every day,” Long explained. “They have this really cool relationship going on.”
Their connection is heartwarming proof that love and friendship can heal wounds and bridge the gap between even the most different of creatures. Jasper, once a vulnerable raccoon fighting for survival, now serves as a gentle guardian and friend to Hope — and likely a source of comfort to many of the other animals at the sanctuary. This year, Long expects to care for over 100 orphaned fawns, all in need of safety, love, and a second chance. Her work at Texas Fawn and Friends isn’t just about survival; it’s about giving these animals a space where they can thrive and form connections — like the one between Jasper and Hope.“It’s incredibly rewarding work,” Long said. “You see these animals come in so vulnerable, and then you get to watch them heal, grow, and sometimes even form beautiful friendships like this.”The touching friendship between Jasper and Hope is a reminder of the resilience of animals — and the incredible difference that compassion and care can make. Their bond is one of pure, unconditional love, and it's clear that their story has touched many hearts.
We hope these two continue to share their peaceful days and cozy evenings together for many years to come. Stories like theirs inspire us to look at the animal world with awe — and maybe to hug our own loved ones a little tighter.
