Tesla's Cybertruck Superhorn: A Bold Upgrade Explained by Lead Engineer

This upgrade, now included as an in-app update via the Tesla mobile app, marks a permanent and forward-thinking shift in the vehicle's functionality.

Wes Morrill, Tesla’s Lead Engineer for the Cybertruck, shed light on the rationale behind this significant change. The move aligns with Tesla’s vision of creating a vehicle that is as innovative in its sound systems as it is in its design and performance.

The traditional trumpet horn, mounted on the front bumper, has been replaced by the Superhorn—a powerful speaker located in the front fascia near the passenger-side wheel. This upgrade serves multiple purposes, including acting as the vehicle’s primary horn, powering Tesla’s Pedestrian Warning System (PWS), and enhancing the Boombox feature, which allows customizable sounds when the vehicle is parked.

Additionally, a second PWS speaker is positioned near the driver-side rear wheel, exclusively dedicated to pedestrian alerts and Boombox sounds. With regulatory approval secured, newer Cybertrucks now emit a distinct “BRRTTT” sound, replacing the familiar “MEEEP” of older trumpet horns. This evolution has led to the phasing out of the older horn entirely in newly manufactured Cybertrucks.

For earlier models produced before the Superhorn received approval, both the traditional horn and Superhorn were installed. However, Tesla has clarified that reverting to the older setup is not feasible, as the trumpet horn operates independently of the vehicle's advanced control systems.

Visually, the Superhorn resembles a speaker and reflects Tesla’s dedication to innovative vehicle design and functionality. Morrill emphasized that integrating the new system future-proofs the Cybertruck, ensuring compatibility with Tesla’s evolving features. The decision to initially include both systems has proven a successful strategy, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to staying ahead of the curve.
