Multiple Recalls Hit Walmart Stores in August

Federal health officials and food manufacturers have announced several recalls affecting Walmart locations in 23 states, warning customers not to consume certain products. The recalls involve Taylor Farms salad kits, Blue Bell ice cream, and shrimp imports from Indonesia, each tied to separate but serious safety concerns.

The risks include undeclared allergens such as sesame, soy, almonds, walnuts, and pecans — all of which can cause severe allergic reactions — as well as cesium-137 contamination in shrimp, which carries potential long-term health hazards if consumed repeatedly.

Taylor Farms Honey Balsamic Salad Kit Recall

On August 26, Taylor Fresh Foods issued a voluntary recall of its Taylor Farms Honey Balsamic Salad Kit (6/8.3 oz). Instead of the correct balsamic vinaigrette, some packages mistakenly contained Asian Sesame Ginger dressing, which introduced undeclared sesame and soy allergens.

• Affected packages: Code dates beginning with “TFRS,” with “Best If Used By” dates through September 4, 2025.
• States impacted: Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and West Virginia.

Blue Bell Moo-llennium Crunch Ice Cream Recall

On August 22, Blue Bell Creameries recalled a limited number of Moo-llennium Crunch half-gallon cartons after a packaging mix-up. The ice cream was mistakenly placed in Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough cartons, leading to the unlisted presence of almonds, walnuts, and pecans.

Affected cartons: Code 061027524 on the lid.

Distribution: Alabama, Arkansas, the Florida Panhandle, northwest Georgia, southern Illinois, southern Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Texas, and southwest Virginia.

FDA Advisory on Radioactive Shrimp Imports

The most concerning recall came on August 19, when the FDA issued a warning against consuming frozen shrimp imported from PT. Bahari Makmur Sejati, an Indonesian seafood company. Tests detected cesium-137, a radioactive isotope, in shipping containers tied to the company.

• States impacted: Distributions included Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, and Texas, though other regions may also have been affected.
• Response: The FDA placed the supplier on an import alert, blocking future shipments until compliance is confirmed. U.S. Customs and Indonesian regulators are also investigating the contamination.

The FDA noted that while detected radiation levels were below the threshold for acute harm, long-term exposure could increase cancer risk. Consumers were urged to dispose of any affected shrimp and seek medical guidance if concerned about exposure.

Walmart and Industry Response

A Walmart spokesperson said the company immediately removed the shrimp from its stores, emphasizing: “The health and safety of our customers is always our top priority. We are working with the supplier and regulators to investigate the issue.”

Both Walmart and food manufacturers involved in the recalls stressed that refunds and support are available to affected customers, with distribution restrictions already in place to prevent further sales.
