Richard Gere Sells Connecticut Estate and Prepares for Move to Spain with Family

Describing Spain as a place filled with joy, culture, and culinary excellence, Gere views the transatlantic relocation as an adventure for their young children, Alexander and James. Although he did not formally list the property, it was purchased by an LLC associated with developer James Hoffman. The historic Connecticut home, originally built in 1938, features elegant rooms, landscaped grounds, a pool, and a guesthouse. Despite taking a slight loss on the sale, Gere is excited about the upcoming transition, while also retaining a New York-area property.

Richard Gere is officially leaving the U.S. as he prepares to settle in Spain. The 75-year-old actor has sold the Connecticut home he bought from musician Paul Simon, closing the deal for $10.75 million in an off-market transaction with an LLC tied to real estate developer James Hoffman of SBP Homes.

Gere initially acquired the six-bedroom, 11-bathroom New Canaan property in the summer of 2022. Purchased from Simon and his wife, Edie Brickell, for $10.8 million, the 31-acre estate had been listed at $13.9 million, giving Gere a significant discount at the time. The home’s initial listing described it as a “personal oasis,” featuring landscaped gardens, a guesthouse, a pool, and expansive natural surroundings. Plans to develop part of the property into a farm had been discussed in early 2023, but in April, Gere announced a change of course. In an interview with Vanity Fair Spain, he expressed his desire to move with his family to Spain, where his wife, Alejandra Silva, is originally from.

During the interview, Gere praised Spain’s culture, generosity, and cuisine, sharing that relocating would allow Silva to be near her family and old friends. “Alejandra generously spent six years with me in my world, and it’s time for me to give her at least six years in hers,” he shared. The actor, who recently sold his New Canaan home for a slight loss, also revealed that he plans to keep a U.S. property “in the countryside near New York.”

The couple, who married in 2018, have two young sons, Alexander, 5, and James, 4. Gere also has an older son, Homer, from his marriage to Carey Lowell, and Silva shares a son, Albert, with her former husband, Govind Friedland. Since COVID-19, Silva has shared glimpses of their New York-area home and a vegetable garden they developed during the pandemic.

Gere’s property sales mark a new chapter, but he remains deeply rooted in the New York area, where he has long invested in real estate. In recent years, he sold a 50-acre Westchester estate to Ryan Murphy and had listed a Hamptons property in Sag Harbor for $65 million. His decision to embrace life in Spain reflects both a personal and cultural shift, as he describes Spain as a country where people “live transmitting joy and happiness.”
